  7.    NOTE:   The  documentation is  contained in  a self-extracting  .EXE file.
  8.    When you  use the  INSTALL program, you  can copy  it over in  normal text
  9.    format.

  11.    PROGRAM INSTALLATION:
  12.  
  13.    First, you will need to install ACCU Music System onto another floppy disk
  14.    or to a hard disk  directory.  Here's some brief instructions on how to do
  15.    this:
  16.  
  17.    Begin, by  running the INSTALL.EXE  program from  either the disk  or hard
  18.    disk directory where the files for the program are located.
  19.  
  20.    NOTE:  Be  sure to change to  the drive or directory  where INSTALL.EXE is
  21.    located (i.e. don't type B:INSTALL).
  22.  
  23.    It will first ask you if you want to read this README file.
  24.  
  25.    Next, it will  go through the modules  which you can install.   You do not
  26.    have to  install all of them, but  it is recommended that  you install the
  27.    program files  for ACCU  Music System and  the documentation.   The INTUNE
  28.    module is only for .ROL song playing on sound cards.  If you DO NOT have a
  29.    sound card, you do not need to install this.   Just select the modules you
  30.    want or don't want by press Y or N.

  32.    You will  then be prompted for  a destination drive.  Press  the letter of
  33.    the drive to  install to.   It will then  prompt you  for a directory  (it
  34.    defaults to  \MUSICSYS).   Press ENTER to  keep it,  or change  it as  you
  35.    please.   It  will then  check  the available  space on  your  destination
  36.    location  and then  install the  modules you  selected.   You will  see it
  37.    uncompress the modules into destination drive/directory.

  39.    If you  are working with a  floppy drive only  system, you may have  to do
  40.    multiple installations in order  to get it completely installed.   This is
  41.    because if  you are installing to  your 2nd floppy, the  music program and
  42.    the INTUNE program may not both fit.  With 720k, 1.2mb, and 1.44mb  floppy
  43.    disks, this shouldn't be a problem.

  45.    After running the  installation program, it  will automatically change  to
  46.    the   drive  and  directory  where  you  installed  the  program  and  run
  47.    MUSICSYS.EXE for you.  (NOTE:  If you only installed INTUNE, this will not
  48.    work.)

  50.    MANUAL INSTALLATION:

  52.    This section is only if the above installation did not work okay.

  54.    First, make a directory to store the files.
  55.    Example:  MD \MUSICSYS
  56.  
  57.    Go to the location of the distribution files.

  59.    Use the COPY command to copy any non-.EXE files:
  60.    COPY file destination
  61.  
  62.    Example:  COPY README destination
  63.    (where destination might be:  C:\MUSICSYS)
  64.  
  65.    Use  the  name of  each  .EXE  file  to  unarchive  it,  followed  by  the
  66.    destination directory:  program destination
  67.  
  68.    Example:  ACCUMUSC.EXE destination
  69.  
  70.    (where destination might be:  C:\MUSICSYS)

  72.    PROGRAM DISTRIBUTION:
  73.  
  74.    This  program  is being  distributed  as  ShareWare.   This  means  that I
  75.    encourage the passing around of it and its availability to the public.  It
  76.    also  means that I invite you to  register your copy of ACCU Music System.
  77.    The  shareware version  of  the program  is  identical to  the  registered
  78.    version of the  program.  NOTE:   There is a begging screen  when you exit
  79.    the  program  and a  one-line registration  reminder  that appears  on all
  80.    printed sheet  music.  If you  register, BOTH of these  annoyances WILL be
  81.    disabled by the  registration code.   Please register this program  if you
  82.    continue to use it in the future.  See the  documentation and REGISTER.FRM

  85.    USES FOR THIS PROGRAM:
  86.  
  87.    This program includes everything that you need to create your own music on
  88.    your  computer.   It  has a  graphics-based  (or text-based)  editor which
  89.    allows you to enter notes and see them on the screen as well.  It includes
  90.    a transposer which will let you change the key  signature of your music as
  91.    well as raise/lower your music by half steps.  It also allows you to print
  92.    out your music in sheet music format.  It allows you to play your music on
  93.    the PC speaker or on a sound card.  Finally, you can convert your songs to
  94.    the .ROL  format for distribution.   Your songs can range  from simple one
  95.    voice  files to  complex multiple-voice  songs with  multiple instruments,
  96.    etc.

  98.    Previous  users of this  program have found  this program useful  for many
  99.    applications.  Below is a list of possible uses:

  101.    o    Students:
  102.         -    Use  this for typing in your own musical compositions and seeing
  103.              how they sound.  Then print out your music for others to play.
  104.         -    Type in parts from  band or orchestra.  Print it out  so you can
  105.              read the music better (rather than trying to read someone else's
  106.              poorly handwritten music).   Transpose the music to  another key
  107.              signature for  easier playing.   Transpose the music  to another
  108.              instrument (i.e. Bass  clef baritone to treble clef)  by raising
  109.              or lower it by half steps.  Play it on the speaker or sound card
  110.              so you can hear what it is supposed to sound like.
  111.         -    Use it  to keep a collection of scales, etudes, or songs on file
  112.              for other students.

  114.    o    Teachers/Directors:
  115.         -    Use  this program  to  type  in  music  for  your  students  for
  116.              distribution  to  them.    This  is  a  low-cost alternative  to
  117.              professional music packages.
  118.         -    Use it for transposing parts for different instruments.
  119.         -    Use  it for teaching about music  - notes, chords, etc.  Combine
  120.              both  the printouts  and  playing ability  to demonstrate  music
  121.              concepts.

  123.    o    Sound card owners
  124.         -    Use this program to create music for your Adlib compatible sound
  125.              card.    Use  standard  music notation  rather  than  unfamiliar
  126.              'player piano' style of composition.
  127.         -    Use it to print out copies of your music.
  128.         -    Use it to  convert your collection of .ROL files  to sheet music
  129.              printouts so you  can play  the songs yourself  (on a  keyboard,
  130.              with an instrument, etc.).

  132.    o    Music Enthusiasts
  133.         -    Use  it to  create  your own  printed  sheet music  rather  than
  134.              handwriting the music.  It makes  it easier if you make mistakes
  135.              or change the music often.

  137.         -    Play your music so you can hear what it sounds like.

  139.    o    Religious leaders or religious music organizers
  140.         -    Use  it for creating readable  music for your  organist or other
  141.              instruments.
  142.         -    Use it for creating a music book.

  144.    Quite  a few  of the  above applications  have been  used with  ACCU Music
  145.    System  by registered users.   I'm  sure there are  other uses  I have not
  146.    thought of as well.

  148.    SOUND CARD USE
  149.  
  150.    In  order to use a  sound card with  ACCU Music System, you  need an Adlib
  151.    compatible sound card.  You will also need a sound driver and a .ROL music
  152.    file player.   See the documentation  for complete  information on how  to
  153.    obtain all of this (see SOUND CARD USE).

  155.    Included with ACCU Music System is the shareware program InTune which is a
  156.    .ROL music file player.  It is NOT written  by me, but by shareware author
  157.    Doug Brandon.    The  version  included  is  the  UNREGISTERED,  SHAREWARE
  158.    version.   I have  included it  for your convenience.   If  you decide  to
  159.    continue  using Intune,  please register it  with Doug  Brandon.   See the
  160.    documentation of InTune for information on registering it.

  162.    ABOUT THE PROGRAM:

  164.    ACCU  Music System is written  in C++ (although most  of it is standard C)
  165.    and compiled with Borland C++ 3.1.   It started out as a BASIC program  on
  166.    my Atari.  It  easily outgrew that and so  was rewritten in C on  the IBM.
  167.    It  is currently over 30,000 lines long.   Any comments or questions about
  168.    the program and how it works are welcome.

  170.    This program  was formerly named ACCU  Music Printer.  I  changed the name
  171.    starting  with version 3.0 to reflect the fact that not only does it print
  172.    music, but it edits it,  transposes it, converts it, plays it,  AND prints
  173.    it.

  177.    I  am currently attending the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA),
  178.    majoring in  Computer Science.   I am  a sophomore  there this  fall.   My
  179.    permanent address  is in Poway, California  which is a city  only 30 miles
  180.    away from  downtown San Diego.   I have been  programming for a  number of
  181.    years.    I first  started  out  on  the Atari  800  with  BASIC and  have
  182.    progressed to  C on the IBM  PC.  I  have written several  other shareware
  183.    programs  for the IBM.   I have an interest in  music, thus the writing of
  184.    ACCU Music System.
